BCHC Redwood Unit Education!
Educational Opportunites
Gentle Use of stock and our Public Land Resources
Most locals learn of our Unit activities at our Pack Clinic in February, but we have a variety of activites throughout the year.
History day events in Arcata for elementary school children have been a tradition for a number of years. We have a number of educators in our Unit that have offered similar events for other groups like 4H, Boy Scouts, and the Humboldt Historical Society.
"Bigger Kids"  have learned from our members by taking classes at Humboldt State University. The time honored method of "Throwing a Diamond Hitch" on a pack mule is explained to the scholars, and the students have to demonstrate their abilties for a final exam.
We have a few accomplished Dutch Oven Cooks, and are often willing to share their knowledge and goodies.
We have sent four members to Wilderness Rider Training, a week long teaching clinic, where participants learn about minimum-impact stock camping techniques. The class graduates have committed to share their knowledge in our local community.
If you are interested in scheduling a presentation, please contact our Education Committee Chairman, Pete Kriger. His email address is pkrigerjr@yahoo.com . Pete served as the BCHC State Education Committee Chairman in 2005.
